In the frame of the EU-LIFE "ENREM" demonstration project (Enhanced Nutrients Removal in Membrane Bioreactor), the KWB, together with the Berliner Wasserbetriebe, will build and operate an MBR plant designed for advanced biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal, featuring the processes of post-denitrification and enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The specific biological mechanisms were investigated in details in previous pilot studies, however to date, the development of a biological model to simulate the static (constant input conditions) and dynamic (variable input conditions) operation of the system, was not possible.
The operation of the 12m3/d demonstration MBR plant would be the adequate platform to develop and validate such a model. The model should be adapted from the international Activated Sludge Model 3, incorporating EBPR mechanisms, but should also reflect the features related to MBR and post-denitrification, over a broad range of operation conditions (sludge retention time, wastewater characteristics, etc). The implementation of such a model would facilitate the design of future plants, and enable the optimisation of operation conditions.
