MBR-3: Comparison and evaluation of immersed MBR processes operating at the full scale

Bart Verrecht

TW

10/2006 -09/2007

This is a 2 part project looking at both hollow fibre and flat sheet MBR processes operating at full scale, consisting of 8 months research in the UK and 4 months in the US. The MBR plants to be studied provide reclaimed water for reuse as secondary water (toilet flushing, plant watering, etc).

at workIt is anticipated that the UK based research will involve optimizing and evaluating the operating performance of a full scale hollow fibre (Zenon) MBR plant in the south-east of England. This research is unique in that it will be the first time in the UK an MBR plant has been used for the production of reclaimed water.

The US research will be a comparison of the performance of hollow fibre (Zenon) and flat sheet (Kubota) immersed MBR processes operating at full scale by an RWE/Thames subsidiary - American Water. The plant provides reclaimed water for a large shopping mall in New Hampshire, USA. The research offers a unique opportunity to directly compare different immersed MBR systems operating on the same wastewater source at full scale.

The project would comprise of a total of 6 - 8 month data gathering exercise in both the US and UK to allow a detailed evaluation and comparisons to be drawn with regard to achieved membrane flux, overall aeration requirements and process and membrane scour air requirements as well as general process performance and operability.
